(8/30/21) Bulls are excited by Jackson Hole remarks about
tapering later this year, but no rate hikes in sight. However--each
sell off has been accompanied by drop in volume, indicating
internal weaknesses in the market: Breadth is weak, volume is weak,
volatility remains compressed. Major market capitalization
stocks--Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google--are the stocks into which
investors are crowding. What happens when sentiment changes? The
last time we saw similar market behavior was 2017...and don't
forget what happened in 2018, with lots of volatility and a 20%
sell off when the Fed dropped interest rates. The problem now is
the Fed is backed into a box with an inability to expand QE or
lower interest rates. But markets remain bullish. The 50-DMA will
be the bellwether for the next big correction.
